| Being a parent
is one of the toughest jobs a person can undertake and
it does not matter how good we think we might be at
being a parent there are times when we all need help
and support.
As children grow into teenagers and young adults their
behaviour and actions, along with those of parents at
times, put relationships under strain. This sometimes
results in the young person leaving or even being thrown
out of the family home by their parents.
If, for whatever reason your son or daughter is leaving
or has left home there are things you can do to help.
The following are just some suggestions:
- Try to stay calm during stressful situations involving
your son/daughter
- Try to find out the facts about what is going on
- Don’t just blame yourself
- Seek advice and support from specialist agencies
if necessary (see the emergency contacts on this website)
If your son or daughter is preparing to leave home
speak to them about what is involved in living independently
including:
- Looking after themselves; hygiene, health, safety,
comfort, nutrition
- Looking after their surroundings; tidying and cleaning
up, keeping secure
- Look after their money; budgeting, saving, making
wise choices
- Taking responsibility for themselves
Let them know that they can return home if necessary
– “Keep the door open”
