Young people, staff and volunteers all play an active part in KEY

25 Years This year marks 25 years since KEY was set up. We will be marking our 25th anniversary with a series of exciting events throughout the year, a total of 25 in fact. Dates for these will be announced via our Facebook Page and News Section.

Food Bank

KEY’s Food Bank.

KEY’s Food Bank.

KEY has been operating a food bank since 1992. We collect food donations and distribute them as part of emergency support packs to young people who are experiencing hardship.  The packs contain enough food for up to 3 days. They will also sometimes include toiletries and other household items depending on a person’s needs.

How to collect a pack ?

To claim a pack you must be aged 16 -25 and in receipt of a signed referral form verifying you are in need.  Any care professional such as a housing officer, social worker, CAB advisor, doctor or health visitor, and authorised person from a local church can sign a referral form for you.  Download a referral form.

You must bring the referral form with you when you come to collect a pack. Packs can be picked up at at 116 Baring Street, South Shields. A maximum of 2 packs per person are allowed in any 6 month period.

Who provides the food?

All food given out by KEY is donated. Schools, churches, businesses and members of the public all make donations. The most popular time of year for donations is the Harvest Festival and Christmas. However, donations are required all year round. Food donations must be non-perishable and in-date. Volunteers help with collecting donations, sort food to check it’s in date, and put it into boxes ready to be given out as emergency support packs.
